Resources & Guidelines for CPE Participants

Below are important resources and guidelines for co-creating contemplative, Enneagram-informed circles of care that invite not only safety, but also bravery.

These are intended not as rigid “rules” but as invitations to deepening our own presence and compassion.

The first duty of love is to listen.

CPE Group Guidelines

Shared, Engaged Presence

We prepare by setting boundaries around our space and so we can arrive, best we can, with our full, engaged presence. We listen to one another without interruption, including written chats. We listen not to respond, but to receive.

Releasing the Need to Fix

This is a space free from unsolicited advice-giving.

We trust each person’s inner wisdom and the quiet, unfolding work of the Spirit moving within them.

We also allow for a full spectrum of feelings to be expressed—without the need to “fix” anyone—honoring each person as whole and worthy just as they are.

Honoring Silence

Share when you feel genuinely moved, not to fill the space. Silence is not empty here—it is alive. You are invited to notice what arises in you when the room grows still. At times, you may also explicitly ask for prayer or for silent group holding of whatever you are experiencing.

A Gesture of Completion

Placing your palms together at your heart (Namaste) is a simple way to signal that your sharing has come to rest.

An Important Note about Confidentiality

Our CPE groups rest on a shared commitment to confidentiality. While this has never needed to happen, participants will be expelled if it is discovered that this sacred trust has been broken.

What is spoken in this circle is held with deep care and respect across all CPE groups, honoring the trust that allows us to meet one another more fully and truthfully.

To support safety, integrity, and depth, our groups are held within a wider container of loving supervision. Rev. Nhien and the CPE Facilitator Team meet in a confidential professional circle, where group experiences may be gently reflected upon—without naming individuals—in service of wise facilitation, shared care, and the well-being of all.

Inner work often touches tender places. Feeling activated or triggered at times is a natural and human part of contemplative practice, especially when we are engaging the body, emotions, and lived experience. You are invited to honor your own pacing and capacity—trusting yourself to take what is supportive and to step back when needed.

Cultivating a compassionate, trauma-aware, and trustworthy community is central to this work—and to the way we walk this contemplative path together.

Recognizing that we are bound to do this imperfectly, we nevertheless commit to meeting one another with integrity, care, and wholeheartedness.

Important note: In the event that an experience within a group feels unsafe or seems to cross ethical boundaries, you are warmly encouraged to reach out outside of group space so it can be held with care.

We are here to support you.

“The relationships in [a circle of trust] are filled not with expectations and demands but with abiding faith in the reality of the inner teacher and in each person’s capacity to learn from it.”
–Parker Palmer

What to Expect

The Transformational Arc of CPE

Our CPE gatherings follow a gentle, contemplative rhythm designed to support presence, depth, and shared reflection. Each week unfolds within a consistent structure that allows trust, spaciousness, and meaningful connection to emerge over time.

Week 1: Orientation & Opening Circle

We begin with a brief contemplative practice and a warm orientation to the journey ahead.

This opening session includes:
• An overview of our 12-week arc
• A review of our CPE Group Sharing Guidelines
• Brief, around-the-circle introductions

We also offer a short teaching and refresher on Centering Prayer, our primary weekly practice.

(Weeks 1 and 12 are the only sessions in which we may not sit for the full 20 minutes.)

Weeks 2–11: Practice & Shared Reflection

Each gathering follows a steady contemplative rhythm:
• Opening circle and grounding practice
• A full 20-minute silent Centering Prayer sit
• Time for shared reflection and gentle dialogue
• A closing benediction

These weeks form the heart of our shared practice.

Week 12: Closing Circle

Our final session is devoted to reflection, gratitude, and a closing benediction—honoring what has unfolded and offering a sacred “for now” as we prepare for what comes next.

Resources for Contemplative Practice

Contemplative practices are diverse.

We often open our circles with a 3-centered grounding practice, led by the group facilitator. As appropriate, CPE facilitators may also share their own favorite contemplative practices with the group.

During the 20-minutes of silence we engage each gathering, we invite you to engage the practice feels right for you. At the same time, we do warmly encourage you to consider Centering Prayer, which is the primary practice we foster here at Evolving Enneagram, along with Welcoming Prayer.

If you are new to these practices, or seek a refresher, here are resources for your exploration:
